vlcmediaplayer VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer released under the GNU and has support for a wide variety of audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and other streaming protocols. It includes a large number of common encoding and decoding codecs like 3GP, AVI, FLV, QuickTime, MP4, Ogg, etc.

A great advantage is that VLC plays incomplete videos, opens broken videos from BitTorrent and plays ISOs without unpacking the file it is also well known for being able to play encrypted DVDs on Linux by using the DVD decryption library.

The Skin Editor allows designers to create skins for the application without the need of knowing XML or the internal makeup of skins. It provides an easy-to-use interface giving full control over all of the skin’s features.

VLC media player can be used as a server and as a client to stream and receive network streams. The VLS (VideoLAN Server), can stream MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 files, DVDs, digital satellite channels, television channels and live videos on the network in unicast or multicast.
